Cerro de la Muerte — the 'summit of death' — is the highest point on the Pan-American Highway, a wild páramo of stunted grasses and dwarf bamboo above the tree line. Storms build fast here in the afternoon, and the light turns silver-gold beneath bruised clouds just before the rain. Hazel stitched that last electric glow across the bunch-grass at 3,300 meters.
